Minister for Prisons, Probation and Lowering Reoffending, Lord Timpson, was at HMP Highpoint for the ground-breaking occasion on Thursday

A rural jail is to extend its capability by greater than 50% to turn out to be “the UK’s largest” jail, the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) has stated.

Three four-storey houseblocks can be constructed at HMP Highpoint in Suffolk, between the villages of Stradishall and Nice Thurlow, close to Haverhill.

Building work has begun on the 700-place enlargement, together with workshops and instructing amenities to assist prisoners get jobs on launch, stated the MoJ.

Minister for Prisons, Lord Timpson, stated they had been “designed with a laser-focus on chopping crime” and had been a part of plans to ship 14,000 extra jail areas by 2031.

“We can’t merely construct our means out of this disaster, which is why we’re additionally reviewing sentencing so we are able to lock up harmful offenders, minimize crime and make our streets safer,” Lord Timpson added.
